Q:練習八段錦和易筋經時是否有需要特別注意的呼吸方法?
Is there a specific breathing method that I need to be aware of when practicing Qigong Baduanjin (Eight-Section Brocade) and Yi Jin Jing ( I Chin Ching )?
 
A:根據我在少林寺裡接觸到到每一種功法,不管是快速剛猛的拳法兵器套路或是動作較為柔和的養生功法,都有屬於自己的呼吸調息方式,拳法兵器因為速度較快,所以調息方式也較為複雜,在此就先不討論。
Based on all the skills I encountered at Shaolin Monastery, each skill has its own way of breathing regulation, whether it's fast combat and weaponry skills or gentle health cultivating exercises. Because fast combat and weaponry skills requires a rather complex breathing regulation, I will not discuss it here.
 
至於八段錦和易筋經的調息方式首重協調,讓呼吸和動作能夠配合的自然而沒有不順的感覺,即可以讓身體感到放鬆,
The fundamental way of regulating respiration of Qigong Baduanjin and Yi Jin Jing is coordination. Once your breath and body movement are coordinated, your body will be relaxed.
 
八段錦及易筋經的每一式功法都有不同的呼吸模式,有分深淺、輕重、閉氣、發勁...等,若能將呼吸和動作配合的好,則可達到練功的最佳效果,
In each section (or piece) of Qigong Baduanjin and Yi Jin Jing, there's a different way of breathing required, such as deep, shallow, light, heavy, suspend breathing and exerting strength. Your training will be most effective when they are coordinated with your body movement.
 
但初學者一般較難掌握技巧,可先從自然呼吸開始,先以自己習慣的呼吸方式為主再配合我所說明的調息方式,但需注意的是,若是在過程中有感受到身體不舒服或是呼吸不順暢的狀況就應先行停止練習,讓身體稍微放鬆及適度休息之後再重新嘗試,可以試著讓身體去感受每一個動作所帶來的伸展及細微的變化,慢慢的就會抓到練功的感覺,切記操之過急,健康是靠一點一滴慢慢累積而來。

But the skills are more difficult for beginners to grasp. I suggest they start by breathing naturally and then practice regulating their breathing with the methods instructed. Whenever you feel uncomfortable or have difficulty to breathe, you should stop the process and take a short break. Training can be resumed after proper recession. Try to let your body feel the subtle difference of each movement, and slowly, you will grasp the flow of the training. Good health is build upon everyday regular exercises, so remember not to rush it.
