The Origin of "Yijin Jing"
It is said that "Yijin Jing"( Sinew Changing Classic) was created by Damo, the primary ancestor of China Buddhism Zen. The main purpose was to active and vitalize the muscle, joints and circulation and then to enhance the spirituality by breathing and stretching through their long-term spiritual practice of monks.
It is also said that Damo left two martial classics; one is "Yijin Jin", and the other one is "Xi Sui Jing." The latter was carried out of temple by Hui-Ke, the second ancestor of China Buddhism Zen when he left for preaching; the former was kept in Shaolin Monastery and practiced by the monks from generation to generation. The prologue of "Yijin Jin" was written by a general in Tang Dynasty named Li Jing and a famous subordinate of Yue Fei named Niu Gao, which increases the credibility of this classic.
After textual research, "Yijing Jin" was supposed to be written in the middle of Ming Dynasty. The original author possibly just named after Shaolin Monastery since Shaolin Kung Fu's fame spread over after the martial monks beat Japanese.
According to legend,"Yijin Jin" was found in a metal box in the bottom of a well when people were guided to where it was by a vision that a light came out from this well near a deep mountain valley. However, the original "Yijin Jin" contains the Yin and Yang theory of Taoism, which is contradictory to the Buddhism of Shaolin Monastery. So there is another possibility, the author of "Yijin Jin" more likely could be Taoist Zi Ning.
"Yijin Jin" actually is a long-term record of the skills and practice of these exercises. Both public and Shaolin monks practiced the exercises and different versions of "Yijin Jin" were formed according to the different ways of training. No matter what version we use, the exercise enhances physical health dramatically when practicing consistently.
